Be prepared!
Foaling times is the best time of the year but also the most stressful time! Don´t be caught off guard and make sure you are as prepared as possible in case of complications - a good foaling kit is key and here´s what we always have on hand:
- Contact details to vets in case of emergency
- Chlorhexidine, mild iodine or similar antimicrobial solution for dipping the foals navel
- Cup for dipping the navel
- Lots of clean towels
- Thermometer
- Vetrap for bandaging the mares tail
- Mild soap and cotton
- Sterile gloves
- Scissors
- Colostrum
- Sterile baby bottle
- Enema for the foal (pediatric)
- Dewormer for mare
- Snaptest
- Baling twine to tie up placenta
